Green tea (Camellia sinensis) and java tea (Orthosiphon stemineus) are two plants used widely in Eastern-style medicine and do not contain the types of chemicals or compounds that rely on elevating the metabolic rate as the main method for encouraging weight loss. More than three millennia ago, the Chinese Emperor, Sin-Non, declared that a daily cup of tea (and historical use suggests that it was green tea) could "dissolve many poisons in the body.

 

Indeed, studies of green tea, in particular, have shown that it has been linked with:

  • Enhanced immune system functioning,
  • Prevention of normal cells turning cancerous,
  • Suppression the formation and growth of tumors,
  • Regulation of cholesterol levels,
  • Reduced risk of stroke,
  • Reduced control blood pressure,
  • Reduced risk of epileptic seizures in laboratory animals,
  • Reduced control blood sugar levels, and
  • Weight loss.

While many of the claims for the value of the tea still await further validation - I am always skeptical when one substance is said to cure everything - there is mounting evidence that green tea, in particular, has some very important medicinal properties including its capability to promote weight loss.
